Installing ControlaSola
Choose your supply and loads to see how the wiring fits your home.
Electrician only. This page is a general guide. Installation must be done by a qualified, licensed electrician in line with AS/NZS 3000 (the Wiring Rules) and your state requirements. Isolate and test every circuit before opening the switchboard or the device. Switching off one breaker does not isolate the others, because each load has its own supply wire.
Three-phase, hot water 1, hot water 2 and pool
Active (live)NeutralEarthCT lead (low voltage signal)Internal to the device
How it is wired
- The device acts as a switch in the active (live) wire of each load. The solid-state relays are built in.
- Each load gets its own active wire from its breaker to the device, and another from the device to the load. This is true on single-phase too.
- Neutral and earth do not go through the device. They run directly from the switchboard bars to each load.
- The device needs a neutral to power itself. It needs no separate active: it takes its power internally from the hot water 1 active.
- Three CTs clamp the incoming phase conductors (L1, L2, L3) at the grid connection and connect to CT1, CT2 and CT3. Keep the CT numbers matched to the phases, and fit each CT in the direction marked on it.
- One CT clamps the incoming active conductor at the grid connection and connects to CT1. Fit it in the direction marked on the CT.
What connects where
| Connection | From | To |
|---|---|---|
| Hot water 1 active | HW1 breaker | Device HW1 in, then out to the hot water 1 element |
| Hot water 2 active | HW2 breaker | Device HW2 in, then out to the hot water 2 element |
| Pool active | Pool breaker | Device pool in, then out to the pool pump |
| Neutral to each load | Neutral bar | Directly to each load, not through the device |
| Earth to each load | Earth bar | Directly to each load, not through the device |
| Neutral for the device | Neutral bar | Device N terminal |
| CT leads | CTs on L1, L2, L3 | Device CT1, CT2, CT3 |
| CT lead | CT on the incoming active | Device CT1 |
Installation steps
- Switch off at the main switch and prove every circuit dead.
- Mount the device near the switchboard.
- Fit the three CTs on the incoming phase conductors and connect them to CT1, CT2 and CT3.
- Fit the CT on the incoming active conductor and connect it to CT1.
- Run the hot water 1 active from its breaker to the device HW1 in terminal, and from the device HW1 out terminal to the hot water 1 element.
- Do the same for hot water 2, with its own breaker and its own wires.
- Do the same for the pool pump, with its own breaker and its own wires.
- Connect neutral and earth from the switchboard bars directly to each load.
- Connect one neutral from the neutral bar to the device N terminal.
- Close up the switchboard, restore power and test.
Things to know before you start
- The device is powered from the HW1 active. If the hot water 1 breaker is off or tripped, the device is off and cannot control the other loads either.
- Each load keeps its own protection. Every load circuit needs its own breaker and any RCD protection required by the wiring rules.
- Controlled-load (off-peak) hot water: if a hot water system is on a controlled-load circuit with its own meter or relay, speak to your electrician and electricity retailer first. The circuit has to be live during the day for solar heating to work.
- CT leads carry low-voltage signals. Keep them tidy and away from mains cables where practical.
- The diagrams show the general arrangement. They do not replace the instructions that come with your device.
After installation
- Power up. When the device connects to the internet, your Device ID appears on its display.
- Register on this website and enter your Device ID.
- Log in and work through the My Device settings: tariffs, hot water times and pool run times.
- Open My Device Compare to see your results.
